Losing your mother is one of life’s most profoundly hard experiences, with impacts extending well beyond emotional grief. Motherless Daughters Australia (MDA), the leading organisation supporting women who have lost their mothers, commissioned PPG to measure the economic impact of mother loss, including the significant financial, employment, and educational burdens.

PPG surveyed over 1,000 women and found grieving daughters are saddled with an average $24,000 annually in financial costs after losing their mother, while facing a dramatic lifetime earnings loss of over $400,000.

Grieving daughters overwhelmingly report that MDA’s support services are highly effective, with:

  • 96% of daughters reporting an improved understanding of their grief
  • 92% experiencing a stronger sense of community
  • 91% reporting better emotional well-being, and
  • 85% saying MDA has positively contributed to their overall healing process

These numbers underscore the urgent need for public investment in support services like those provided by MDA. If expanded nationwide, these services could generate $123-$287 million in savings for grieving daughters and $31-$71 million in new tax revenue.

“Working with Pragmatic Policy Group on our first of its kind Economic Impact Report was an exceptional experience. From the outset, you went above and beyond to understand who we are, what we do, and the unique support we provide. In a space that is often misunderstood, it was refreshing and reassuring to work with a team that genuinely valued the time needed to get to know us. Your incredible care and dedication meant the final report not only met our needs but absolutely exceeded our expectations, truly delivering a powerful piece of work that will drive real change and support our organisation’s mission well into the future. Thank you for what you have given to Motherless Daughters”
